Emergency medicine is more than what happens when someone arrives at the hospital. Our residents are educators, researchers, mentors, advocates, and neighbors—bringing the knowledge and skills of emergency medicine into the Las Vegas community.
From teaching a child how to stop life-threatening bleeding to caring for an older adult where they live, EM RISE supports programs that connect emergency medicine to our community throughout the lifespan.

Preparing Las Vegas to respond when every second matters.
The October 1, 2017 shooting forever changed Las Vegas. In the years since, our community has demonstrated what it means to be Vegas Strong—neighbors helping neighbors when they are needed most.
Emergency medicine residents carry that spirit forward by bringing Stop the Bleed and emergency preparedness training into K–12 schools, businesses, and community spaces, teaching Las Vegans practical skills to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act before professional help arrives.
Because the person standing next to you may be the first person who can save your life.
Opening the door to medicine.
What began 18 years ago with two research assistants has grown into a program serving 42 aspiring healthcare professionals today.
Undergraduate students gain hands-on experience conducting emergency medicine research at UMC, working alongside physicians, residents, researchers, and patients while developing the skills and mentorship that can help turn an interest in medicine into a career.
And the pipeline is working.

In the most recent 40-student cohort, 10 research assistants began medical school in a single application cycle.
Those students matriculated at institutions including UNLV, Roseman, Albany Medical College, and the University of Washington.
Bringing care to older Las Vegans.
At the other end of the lifespan, residents bring emergency medicine expertise into local retirement and senior communities.
Working with older adults where they live gives physicians experience with the complex realities of aging—from falls and medication management to chronic disease, mobility, cognition, social support, and recognizing when emergency care is needed.
At the same time, older Las Vegans gain greater access to physicians, health education, and connections to care.
We're preparing physicians to care for the community that Nevada is becoming.
Training Here Is Only the Beginning.
Residents spend some of the most formative years of their careers in Las Vegas. They care for our patients. They learn alongside our nurses, paramedics, physicians, and healthcare teams. They conduct research here. They teach our children. They serve our most vulnerable neighbors. They care for our seniors.
Along the way, they build friendships, professional networks, and lives here. When graduation arrives, we want Nevada to be more than the place where they completed residency.
Meeting patients where they are.
Not every patient can come to us.
Emergency medicine residents take healthcare beyond hospital walls through street medicine outreach, connecting with some of Las Vegas's most vulnerable neighbors—including people experiencing homelessness in the streets, encampments, and tunnels of our city.
These experiences teach something that cannot be learned from a textbook alone: how housing, transportation, poverty, substance use, mental health, and access to care shape what happens long before a patient reaches an emergency department.
Better emergency physicians understand the lives their patients return to when they leave the hospital.
